Gateways to Completion (G2C)

What is Gateways to Completion?

Gateways to Completion (G2C) is an evidence-based process for improving student learning and success in high-enrollment courses that have proven to be important gateways to students completing their studies and continuing to graduation. The three-year G2C process includes planning, implementing, and refining gateway courses based on evidence collection. The process includes examining academic course components as well as other points at the university to find ways to ensure students have the best chance of achieving academic success in their first year at the university while mastering their coursework.

Perimeter College and the Center for Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Online Education are leading the initiative within a framework supported by the University System of Georgia and developed by the Gardner Institute, a national nonprofit leader in helping colleges and universities increase student learning and success. G2C is designed to provide faculty who teach gateway courses with new processes and evidence-based guidance to redesign teaching methods aimed at improving student success. The program emphasizes helping students learn an academic growth mindset by embracing challenges and persistence.

The companion initiative to G2C is the Momentum Year initiative, which focuses on first-year student core areas that help determine overall success in the student’s college career. CETLOE is also leading a faculty teaching and learning community on the Momentum Year.

The four courses the process begins with include English 1101, MATH 1001, MATH 1111 and POLS 1101.

Dr. Tristan Denley, Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Chief Academic Officer for the University System of Georgia, provided an overview of the significance of gateway courses during Momentum Morning.
